Did Sailfish OS fulfill your Expectations?

Now, that the most anticipated start-up, Jolla has launched its Sailfish OS, there are mixed reviews that we can see from around the world. While the fans are still mad about it, we can say that it was ‘a better than average’ performance on the Slush event. While the appearance and layout was not up to the mark and could have been better, the multitasking features have sailed off Sailfish to the right heights. The team did laid some serious efforts in the multitasking department and made it easier to navigate and faster to access many apps at a time. The ability to access the running apps from the home screen without actually entering it was a real success move.

The Ambiance feature is one another unique concept to customize your UI’s color using a picture. There
are some changes in the home display and navigation as well, but not that big.

Though the OS is not a trendsetter for the moment, remember that it is an open source platform where all developers are invited to contribute and become a part of the community. Also, the OS may support many of the Android apps as well due to its open behavior. This will help them build their ecosystem faster and better.

So for now, what is your take on the performance of the Sailfish OS? Did you find what you were looking for or the treasure still hidden? Let us know and participate in the poll.

What about offline maps and navigations?

    • Mikael "MMN-o" Nordfeldth says:

I believe offline maps will be best implemented using OpenStreetMap, for which there are already several applications for Maemo/Meego. It allows you to store the entire map database locally (of the entire world if you wish) under a free license.

Other than that, I suppose Google Maps will be available and maybe even Nokia Maps. Though likely only online (due to licensing issues, as map information is usually not free)

There are some missing features like status bar, unified notification hub (for email, social network and rss feed, sms, miss call), swipe down to kill an app. I hope you can also implement built in chatting for facebook, yahoo, gtalk, and so on.

    • Jolla is amazing! says:

I agree with lack of unified notifications center, I hope it will come. I think chatting for facebook, yahoo, gtalk, etc. are software/aplictions/options that will come with further realisation, so upcoming smartphone. they can be easly integrated but they don’t have to be untegral parts of system IMHO.
However notifications center/hub is a must, no doubts for me about this.

There is something on Notification Center in a video which is in Finnish. It will be towards the right from the locked screen, but no details on that yet.

Like the articles states, the changes made by the ambiance theme I feel look a little under used.

I thought it was a little too sterile/clean with regards to the multitasking previews. I feel they could make use of the ambiance feature to create a small border/highlight around them.

I love the idea of the media player preview being interactive (pause/skip) but I feel the UI is in need of a clean up. The theme created by the ambiance feature could be a used to greater extent, to break up UI controls into sections. The biggest issue I have is with the musical genres listed at the top of the screen, they are all truncated and therefore look a really untidy. Maybe on viewing the library of tracks it would be better to provide one view, artist list, album list, genre list etc selectable from the top menu like in Maemo 5.

The one thing I would like is an ongoing update of the preview, say monthly, so that new applications could be shown off and changes reviewed by the community.

    Hi,

I was disappointed too at first glance, but when you read the thoughts of the Jolla team, you can understand why there is no status bar, it’s replaced by the pulley, to let more space for the content on the screen. And the pulley is great because of the one swipe to action, you don’t need to tap and then select.
About notifications, they are on the lock, one swipe away from the home screen, again it’s better.

Well from the keynote at SLUSH event i was interested, I use a Nokia Lumia 800, which i believe has the best form factor, it’s probably one of the best designed phones on the planet. The lack of a unified notification bar and it being replaced by the pulley can be an indication of a rough 3.7-3.9′ screen. The multitasking demos could’ve done better with other functional apps, mostly two dynamic apps side by side. The more interviews with Jolla’s crew I read, the more I can see the genuine interest of all involved. Was a little hazy on their business plan, which isn’t conventional. Jolla may be the catalyst needed to wake the industry out of the rabid complatency we see now from the major players in the industry. Looking forward to passing up mt L800 for the ultimate “Ferrari” OS, Jolla Sailfish. Cheers !

I don’t like Android support. I fear it will kill native Sailfish apps.
I would like to have fewer good apps than tons of crap.
On N9 there is only tousands (less than 10k?) apps and I am still happy to use it.
