Unofficial Sailfish OS Support for Nokia N9/N950

Unofficial Sailfish OS Support for Nokia N9/N950

There were many speculations before the launch of Jolla’s Sailfish OS that whether it would be supporting Nokia’s Meego based Smartphones, Nokia N9/N950. Though the start-up officials had made it clear that they won’t be supporting it as Nokia is a different company and there is no relation between the two except that the start-up’s founders one belonged to Nokia. The news was disappointing for the Nokia users who were expecting to get a new device for the old one with Jolla support. However, some new reports are surfacing. Thanks to the community, Sailfish OS is compatible with Nokia N9/N950; though not official. Yes! You can use the Sailfish OS on your device but you may need to develop some hacking skills to do so as there is no legal way to do so. But remember that Jolla will not be responsible for anything wrong that you might experience. Bring the change to your own risk.

So, how many of you are going to have the new OS on your Nokia device or at least give it a try? Raise your hands!

If there is clear step by step instructions, then i try. (N9)
It do not mean that i should not bye device when it is ready.

  2. just user says:

Make a try of Sailfish OS with your N9 ONLY after warrianty will be expired, as installing it certainly will break warrainty. Also remember always you can find a technical difficoulties so better would be to have a helpful hand from Nokia Care, perhaps quite silently as Great Brother Steven can be watching you… ;)

  3. nfh says:

I won’t change the phone (N9). I’ll stick with Meego if not Sailfish supported, after that Win.

    • Jeff says:

I don’t get all this outrage that the N9 should be supported, I can understand wp7x users demanding that they be able to update to WP8x, but to demand support from an entirely different company, simply because the OS that runs on your ph has a similar name* is crazy stuff.

*harmattan is technically very different to sailfish, sailfish is derived from mer+nemo, & mer+nemo is derived from MeeGoCE, harmattan’s not derived from Maemo 5x but it’s far more like it than MeeGoCE, it had a compatibility layer so that when meego proper arrived, the two of them would be binary compatible.

      • Kanser says:

        @jeff
Sailfish and Meego don’t have similar names but:
        1. Jolla developers are old N9 developers.
        2. Jolla says they love the N9.
        3. Jolla uses the N9(50) as a developer phone.

I understand that they can’t give us official support but they could help us unofficial as developers because they are part of the Harmatan community since they own N9s and N950s.

Well, if you’re a EU citizen that bought the device in EU as a consumer, the worst that can happen is that you lose Nokia’s voluntary warranty.

*But*, you are still eligibile for the *obligatory* 2 year statutory warranty from the seller, that EU law gives you. This warranty cannot be waived by the seller or manufacturer and unless the defect is caused by your flashing, the warranty is still valid.

    Details on:

FSFE Legal: Does rooting your device (e.g. an Android phone) and replacing its operating system with something else void your statutory warranty, if you are a consumer?

  5. Asko Laari says:

Of course I will try. I am a tech freak, so no probleemo

  6. Jeff says:

Just has been done with open-mode & subsequently nitdroid, if this is do-able eventually (which is likely, but it won’t be a polished experience), it’ll be do-able with little-to-no legal risk.

  7. JussiS says:

Phones used for UI demo looked pretty much like N9 hardware so sure I will give it a try!!

  8. Ivan says:

I’ll definitely put it on n950. Though, I’m reluctant to do the same on n9 – that one I need to work as it does :)

    • Kanser says:

Do i understand you right? You have the knowledge to do the port and you will do it? Then you are the first dev who says that he will realize that.

  9. James says:

    I will try.
    ‘cos Harmattan is already dead.
