Home 2013 May My Lost Other Half

My Lost Other Half

Yesterday was the biggest day of Jolla’s life since they were born in Q4 of 2011.Their life has been full of awesomeness, ups and downs and many stories inside their office in Finland. Back in the year of 2012, they introduced themselves via a twitter account.

jolla-initial-tweet

Since then, every MeeGo enthusiast was running around screaming happiness because MeeGo that everyone thought is dead, was indeed alive underneath a better, faster, and more stable, gesture based (Just like the father!) operating system called Sailfish OS. It was yet again a revolution in multi-tasking along with tons of new revolutionary features coming along with it but the only problem was that it always was shown on a Nokia N950 DevKit device not a real Jolla phone!

Sailfish on Nokia N950 DevKit

So Jolla promised that there will be their own designed and engineered handset in the nearest future which brings us to 20/05/2013 known as Jolla Love Day! Interesting enough, an unexpected number of people was waiting for this day and Jolla says it’s “Jolla and their Community” that has done all the work of keeping people enthusiastic and charged up until Jolla’s designer team shows their work. But before the due date, they teased us with a video called I AM THE OTHER HALF  followed by the same title,  hash-tagged in Twitter and every day they showed pictures made of two sides or halves, completing each other.

#IAmTheOtherHalf

#IAmTheOtherHalf

To be honest it was killing me because only two things were in my imagination and guesses about this “Other Half” thing one was a full slide QWERTY physical keyboard which made me very happy inside! and the other was completing me like when male and female make each other complete, I thought this phone is gonna be my wife or something! 😀

I had to wait and see what all the fuss is about! and I can bet no one was thinking as wise as Jolla themselves about this other half theory!

The Other Half

The Actual Other Half

Yup! the time has come and we first saw a phone made out of two halves and many people started saying: “Is that all? changing colors and that’s it? “

I was quite sure there’s something more to it when I saw the phone. I saw a phone with two equal halves and I thought, yea maybe the other half is something more than changing colors, whilst I was saying it a video came out on Engadget verifying my thoughts about The Other Half!

To fulfill your imagination about what The Other Half is about, you need to think beyond the things you knew till now! We have seen iPhones with weird things sticking out of their connectors as their accessories and we have seen Symbian and Android devices that can support USB OTG for connecting memory sticks and things like that to them, but for understanding The Other Half we have to bold our imagination and expand what we were imagining right now.

For instance

Imagine yourself sitting in class teacher is not coming, you’re getting bored, you  just take the other half “the gamepad” and replace it with the back cover of your phone and start playing games!

Or you’re used to chat in travelling or you’ve to write a long email, just take the other half  “the QWERTY keypad” and start writing it with a huge speed!

Or even more while travelling, listening to Music and chatting and etc, battery went low, take the other half “the extra battery” and charge the Jolla.

One example from Marc Dillon as he spoke in their Jolla Love Day and some other interviews, imagine you’re in a club, it’s dark and you wanna take some photos you just replace your back cover with a giant flash and it gives you extra light for brighter pictures!

How cool are these facilities? Of course for now they showed only colors! but even on that part they said each cover is programmed to change the behavior of your device, even you can program it yourself, for example if you change to black, it’s for night and the device goes silent with lower display brightness and lower volume for Media! or even simpler things, you’re wearing jeans, just pick the blue other half and set it with your cloths!

Speaking of the design cues

Jolla hired the best designer companies around for the purpose of designing the exterior of their phone and happily, they haven’t disappoint anyone. The paradox between two halves, one side curvy and the other half flat on the sides, same story at both ends.  The little  JOLLA  written on the top, those magnificent colors matching any mood is just making my eyes melt for it. The combination of aluminium, glass and plastic are just mind boggling.

Paradox between two halves and the little JOLLA!

Paradox between two halves and the little JOLLA!

Sadly there are a few criticisms as well like the screen being  surrounded by blackness of the device. In my opinion that makes the screen to look smaller than 4.5 inch! Like the N9, it has to be connected to the edges and also from the top and bottom, there has to be more screen that useless glass, if you are designing a phone without any button on the surface, that means there has to be more screen not just some unused space.

Too much unused space around the screen

Too much unused space around the screen (Source: Engadget.com)

In comparison to Nokia N9 which frankly is the predecessor of this device, N9 had a lot of screen on the surface and it just wasn’t surrounded by blackness because it was completely the same color and you couldn’t see the edges that easy and yet again, it was very close to the edges of the surface.

That concludes my only criticism about this device and I really hope they consider fixing it some how.

About the Hardware Specifications

There are a few things out about the hardware yet. They are not specified enough to satisfy our taste but as Marc Dillon says in the interview with Pocket Now when Michael Fisher asks him:

“Can you share any additional information on the physical properties of the display? Is it AMOLED or Super LCD, for example?”

And Marc answers:

“We’re leaving some of those details out because we do understand that there are a lot of really big players in the market and they tend to take certain components in the market and dominate them. We created the ability to actually be able to run Sailfish on multiple hardware displays and be able to swap components, so this is part of the demand and supply planning phase. We are committed to this industrial design which is a 4.5-inch display, an 8 megapixel camera on the back and a front-facing camera at the front, and the exact specs of the display we’ll provide when we’re close to delivery.”

So we can fully understand their strategy about hiding some details from us. First of all we now know that some parts like the screen are not finished yet, and secondly we know that it’s better to keep people enthusiastic about knowing the device step by step.

So Far what we only know is:

The phone supports LTE.
It has a Dual-Core processor.
4.5 inch screen.
Bluetooth 3.0 (Probably)
8MP Camera with 1080P video recording.
Android App compatibility
16GB internal memory + SD Card support

That’s all we know for now.

In conclusion Jolla phone is a flagship phone with a mid-range price, and with Sailfish, it is the best phone ever! Especially with it’s other half.

Thanks to Saqib Iqbal for giving me ideas about The Other Half.

Hope you liked my article about The Jolla Phone.

Cheers.

well, it is gonna be another mobile beating iphone 5. funny enough, there are lots of those nowadays. apple just hangs there because of the imperium it built years ago. the current devices are outdated and awfully limited what it comes to software

I’m not very impressed by the ‘other half’ components. These add-ons have never caught on, it’s been tried before. I don’t wanna carry around a bunch of other bits for my phone. A gampad? Why cant the controls be on the screen … works with every other phone? A spare battery? Why can’t the phone just have a decent battery and efficient software to begin with? A flash? Sorry but most of the other ‘flagship’ phones are beginning to make good use of low-light, a massive flash shouldn’t be necessary if the rest of the hardware and software is ‘flagship’. What if I wanna use the extra battery and the flash at the same time …. cause the massive flash sucks up all the power? I’m a huge fan of the N9 and Meego so i’ll be following this with anticipation but the add-on/’other-half’ part is a really big disappointment – it just seems a bit lazy.

I really hope this has an AMOLED though, one thing i loved about my N9 was that the screen was part of the device and not an obvious rectangle that lit up, and i also really liked the standby clock and notifications – hopefully this will make it across also.

In contrast, I think that the “Other Half” concept is great and surely the best approach for a small company. Maybe Samsung can have tens of models with slightly different features available at the same time but a small company can only provide a small number of models. Jolla’s idea is to have one the basic model and then extend (and allow other providers to extend) it with additional features. For example, if you like a physical keyboard, you could buy a basic Jolla and then an additional keyboard that you just snap in to its place; if you go for a long flight and want to watch movies or listen to music, take the keyboard off and snap in an extra battery. They just talked about covers matching your jeans and mood but the concept provides much more: having a phone that truly matches *your* needs has a completely new meaning.

What I really want is a snap-on QWERTY keyboard that can convert the Jollaphone to something like the Dell Venue Pro. I really want a Jolla phone, but I want QWERTY just as much

As far as I’m concerned, there are endless possibilities on this phone and one of them is a full QWERTY keyboard.

They didn’t present dimensions of the device. I take that as a sign that those aren’t written in stone as well… which is good as the device is now too big for one full one hand control – even with sailfish. (See http://youtu.be/zxv7iXwIgno?t=30s) For me the N9 has good dimensions. Nice pocketability too. A bigger screen and less bezel would be welcome though; a 4.5″ screen might fit in a N9’s size body.

It might be because they need the “other halves” to be compatible with future models, as there seems to be some market for oversized mobiles, but I do hope they reconsider.

Also, no details on HDMI-output? I do miss that on the N9. BT4.0 / BT Smart is a must, too. Android now supports it.

since this was only a prototype, Jolla is now seeing what people think about their device so it’s a good thing that you mentioned that. as Marc said, the device might get smaller, lighter and even thinner when the final product is ready.
about the HDMI support there are no details yet, and they might have a chance with BT4.0 as well.

After their inspired teasing on “The other half”, I don’t understand why Jolla is so shy about this powerful concept. With some mockups or just explicite examples things would become so obvious and engaging. About the device, the large plastic frame around that flat screen makes me think this is still a prototype. To me the final device may use the same aluminium chassis with a full curve glass like N9 and Lumia clones. According to his full size, this phone can fit a 5″ screen. Nice post James.

Yes actually I happened to watch a new hands-on video of Jolla and they have literally said that this is a prototype so it means a lot of changes are coming along.
And, they are not shy about the other half they just don’t wanna reveal and show everything at the same time so when they are making people wait for the device for the next 6-7 months they have to have a new thing to show every week, (There’s gonna be weekly peaks!)

I agree, and I don’t think they’re gonna use 1GB unless they have a special kind of programming for RAM management (which doesn’t work on android that much 😀 )

A mobile phone released in 2014 should have the specs below as a minimum. Anything less will be underwhelming and their phones will be perceived as such.

    – Quad-core (by 2014 many phones will have 8 cores)
    – 2GB RAM
    – 16GB internal memory
    – Bluetooth 4.0
    – 13MP camera
    – a thin bezel (e.g., less than 7mm — even the Chinese phone makers can pull this off now)

Jolla came to prove that number of cores don’t matter as much as optimization and lightness of the OS. You can get the same performance even better if you optimize your OS. Like the N9 which was a single core phone and MeeGo was pretty smooth on it. yes for Android OS you’ll need a lot of cores and it still lags but on Sailfish you’ll not need too much cores, that is a waste of battery performance

I think that the devices shown are working prototypes, final product might be a bit smaller. If you compare the cgi press images with the photos of the device, you can see that in photos there are much more wasted space around the display. The final product will be bigger than N9 (which i think is a bad thing), but I don’t think it’s going to be as big as the ones shown Monday.

    Good Job James,
I completely agree, I love almost everything about the Jolla, unlike any other,
BUT, all the blackness around the phone just annoys me,
I have one additional fear, that a useful other half will bulk the phone up 😛 and also like it’s been said already, I don’t want to carry around anything other than the phone (and what’s attached to it, so I hope that it has almost everything I want inside otherwise constantly changing halves won’t do it for me 😛

no no you’re not gonna be changing halves every time! you just use what you need and most of the time the first half is enough. but if you needed any thing more or special you just can connect a new half! it’s not compulsory to always carry what you need, you can just attach what you need and forget about carrying
