Finnish telecom operator DNA which will distribute Jolla Phone in Finland did interesting interview with Jaakko Roppola, Joona Petrell and Jukka Eklund from Jolla. The interview is in Finnish but one of out readers from Finland was kind enough to translate important parts of this interview, and here they are:
11:30 Other half: “We didn’t want to have the phone as one piece, but leave the other half open for user and 3rd party creativity. We wanted to keep it open. We will enable some things with it, but we don’t want to limit its functionality at the moment.”
12:10 3D specs for the other half will be released as soon as possible so that people can see what can be done.
13:10 “The other half is definitely not only a color cover, but it enables a deeper integration into software, which details we can’t reveal yet.”
13:30 “It is very interesting to read people’s comments and ideas about the other half. All ideas go directly into Jolla product development and we have got a lot of good prototyping ideas.”
14:30 “Even if the phone is shipped this year, the product life will continue. We will bring new covers and features in the future”
20:00 Other half: “More information coming soon…”
20:50 Ecosystem: “Android apps work in our OS, so we don’t need our own ecosystem immediately.”
22:30 App store: “Android apps and native Sailfish apps can be fetched from various sources, but at the moment we can’t tell more about them”
26:00 Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, Instagram apps: “Our service integration solves the problem of fetching content from various sources. It gives much easier access to content than separate Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus apps. The user doesn’t have to launch a separate app to see what is going on in social media.”
27:20 Keyboard phone: “At the moment we can’t comment that. At the moment our priority one is to ship the first product. ”
“The community has ideas about creating qwerty covers themselves… which we welcome.”
37:20 Location of manufacturing: “The partner hasn’t been announced yet, but it will be manufactured at partner’s factory.”
38:26 Bezel: “We will do everything [to remove the excess bezels in the phone].” 🙂
42:40 Qt5: “Qt5 is coming, because the phone runs Qt5”
45:10 GPS: “GPS is included”
46:00 Phone calls: “Should we drop capability to make phone calls… phone calls hasn’t been requested much…” 🙂
47:40 Maps and navigation: “We can’t commented it yet – it will be announced later”
51:10 App store: “We will have our own app store”
51:30 Web browser: “We have our own browser, it uses Gecko engine”
And here is the hangout video.
