James’s last article revealed that talk time of Jolla is 7.7/5.5 hours (GSM/3G). Many of our dear readers complained about these disappointing numbers and we’re here to say they’re not disappointing as you might be thinking. We’re not talking Android anymore!
In this article I’ll demonstrate some battery performance of today’s hot mobile phones. You’ll be surprised that talk time is a gimmick.
Here’s the chart showing Talk time on 3G
So Nokia 808 PureView has the worst talk time, but in reality it’s just great. In a normal usage it lasts for about 2-3 days.
My favorite N9 is just a little better than Jolla in terms of talk time, but by Android world measures it sucks. I have a record of 5 days with Nokia N9 and guess what; it wasn’t updated to the latest version! It was on PR1.0 .
According to these numbers iPhones are among the worst mobiles around. In fact, Apple’s revenue in the first three days of selling both iPhone5S and 5C was more than what FairFax financial paid to buy BB. So apparently iPhones are selling like hot cakes despite the fact they have low “Talk Time” performance.
Those Android flagships with their astonishing talk time must have an all around battery performance including web browser and video playback. Let’s find out.
Sony Xperia Z1 has a massive 3000 mAh battery whereas iPhone5 sports a 1440 mAh one. Oddly though, the difference is superb. iPhone5 crushes the Z1 by 4 hours lead. Don’t forget, Talk time of the Z1 was 27:00 hours versus 8:42 on the iPhone5 (According to GSM Arena).
N9, the hero, performed just like its character; Heroic.
Talk time of Sony Xperia Z Ultra is 24:23 while the N9 has done it in 6 hours and 57 minutes. So Xperia Z Ultra’s talk time is 17 hours more than the N9 but as you can see above, N9 is just 1 hour behind the Z Ultra. It’s worth noting that Xperia Z Ultra has a monstrous
battery with 3050 mAh whereas the “I-Stand-Alone” Nokia N9 has a tiny 1450 mAh battery. Well done mate, well done.
The most important device in those charts was Galaxy S4 mini which many of us haven’t noticed. The latter has nearly the same internals as Jolla. The same Screen size, same screen resolution, same RAM, Dual Core CPU (with higher clock speed) and etc. As you can see, GS4 mini finished the test pretty awesome by outperforming all the premium flagships.
There’s one more test for battery which is video playback.
iPhone5’s battery capacity which is half of the one on the Xperia Z1 is offering extra 5 hours of watching video. Once again, N9, the Batman, embarrassed the Xperia Z Ultra.
In my view it’s all about OS. The better IQ an OS has, the better results you get.
N9 with MeeGo harmattan is the closest example to Jolla in terms of OS. I have to admit that N9 fought brave with its immature OS. Every OS update brings better power consumption. Nokia Lumia 1020 with 2000 mAh and the latest WindowsPhone8 Update, GDR2, was the clear leader in video playback test. So we can hope that Jolla with their future updates can improve battery life if it was not that cool.
I’m not saying these words to promise you a premium battery performance with Jolla nor to deny the importance of hardware to make an excuse for Jolla’s (so called) midrange specs, I just want to take your mind away of numbers, cores, mAhs and spec sheet. Power management is a great scale for evaluating an OS where Android fails miserably.
Jolla Ltd. With its tens of staffs built an OS from scratch in an impossible time frame meanwhile they can offer you a great experience as we all are aware of. So Talk time can be easily forgiven and overlooked and seriously are you gonna talk for 7 hours straight while your charger isn’t around? 😛 Who’s the girl?! 😉
Special thanks to Sepehr, the James for the edit and photos. 😉
