Wooh! We are blown away by the news today and unexpectedly there are more news to cover, especially mapping news.
Appello, the Swedish company that makes “Wise Pilot” mapping system installed on Sony Xperia phones, announced their partnership with Jolla to make a truly unlike mapping experience for Jolla / Sailfish users.
“Appello is proud to announce its selection to supply the native mapping experience to Sailfish OS for Finnish mobile phone manufacturer and designer Jolla. Appello was tasked with creating a mobile mapping experience unlike the standard offerings available in the market today and focusing on intuitive, gesture based user interaction. The Maps solution will offer a premium mapping, routing and local search experience leveraging many of the unique design features of the Sailfish OS on which the Jolla phone is based. Appello’s innovative approach and mapping know-how combines well with Jolla’s creativity delivering a solution in keeping with the philosophy of DIT, doing it together.”
Due to the partnership of HERE Maps and Jolla, Sailfish is going to integrate the HERE Maps platform, Map and content on their phone and according to Appello, they are going to integrate the HERE maps solution in their application :
“The Maps solution, which leverages the Nokia HERE Platform, Map and Content, will be supported in 196 countries and offers access to millions of POIs, ensuring that Jolla’s users will always be able to find what they are looking for.”
Appello’s CEO also adds:
“We are very pleased to announce our new partnership with Jolla. Jolla shares Appello’s passion and enthusiasm for bringing innovation into our respective areas of expertise and I am truly excited to see our Maps solution as one of the core features of Jolla’s new device.”
And at the end, there’s a rather nice quote from Stefano Mosconi, CTO at Jolla about the new mapping solution built in Sailfish:
“We at Jolla have challenged the guys at Appello to rethink the possibilities of the mapping application within the canvas of our innovative user experience. And they have responded in a fantastic way. The result is Maps, an app that is beautiful to watch and easy and powerful to use. We enjoy working with them every day and I am sure the app shows that in every corner.”
We are absolutely thrilled by the news since it’s a reliable solution to a new experience on mobile mapping.
The truly amazing HERE Maps support/maps and the newly designed application by Appello. Let’s hope and see the app in action some time soon. It actually sounds (and roughly looks) promising plus it’s really integrated to the system, visual-wise.
UPDATE: Well as you can see in the comments, looks like Panino has found an image showing the Drive Mode of the Appello Maps! It is a rather small photo but it’s the only one available, we’ll get more information soon enough.
Thanks to Panino Manino for the tip 😉
