Sailfish ported to Nokia N9! +miniTutorial

If there’s one thing you can learn from the maemo/meego community, it will be that it never lets you down!

  • Nokia decide’s to kill it, start a new company.
  • Nokia cant support our forum (the good ‘ol TMO), make a foundation to keep it going.
  • Whatsapp wont release a meego version? No worries. Its reverse-engeneering time! (Thanks Tarek!)
  • Nokia wont support our app store? Lets make a new one, a better one. 🙂
  • Lack of apps? Lets port android on it!

I think you got my point? right?

And now,

Screen Shot 2013-12-08 at 8.59.24 PM

Yes, is your N9 getting obsolete? Cant have a Jolla? Well the community has ported Sailfish OS on N9 already!
Heres the latest video:

It has been confirmed that GPS, A-GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi and ‘Calling Functions’ are working!

Anyways here a little tutorial for The Curious Ones! (Thanks Mehran Nyk)

  • Remember this will not harm your Meego Harmattan (If done correctly). *Multi-Boot*!
  • You need to have Ubiboot Installed first
  • Remember you must already have made the OS Partition for this to work!
  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+T in your linux distro to launch the Terminal
  2. In a terminal type “sudo su” (this gives yo the superuser power)
  3. Now you need to have the harmattan flasher
  4. Head to the path of your zImage
  5. Type this “flasher -k zImage -n initrd-moslo -l -b”
  6. Now connect the phone.
  7. It will bring a green screen, here popup the Alt_OS partition
  8. If it has anything inside that partition just remove it.(You can use this command to do so: rm -rf /media/Alt_OS/*)
  9. Now you need the Sailfish Os image!
  10. Transfer it to your Alt_OS partition! (heres a command for that: time sudo tar –numeric-owner -xvf sailfishos_n9_1_0_0_5.tar.bz2 -C /media/Alt_OS/)
  11. Now once the files have been transferred, type these commands:
  • sync;sync
  • umount /media/Alt_OS

Reboot!

Congratulation You Now have Sailfish OS!

Now i know everyone is asking for it, but chill guys.
A fully explained, made by noobs for noob tutorial is on its way!

And also this mini tutorial was made for people using linux, tutorials for windows and maybe Mac will also be coming soon!

Till then,

Happy Porting,
Happy Coding,

Munim was Here! 😀

You are right, the system is not booting correctly (black screen and reboot).
I was able to use Sailfish using another how-to, but it was quite difficult.
My suspect is that the tarball for this post wasn’t created correctly. I had exactly the same problem when I tried to create a snapshot of my Alt_OS partition.

Once the Sailfish is ported to all N9 out there, it will help spread this new OS to the whole world sooner. I’m keeping an eye on this significant event here from China~

Windows version: insert Linux install CD or USB-drive, reboot and install Linux :p Or maybe a live-Linux boot CD/USB-Drive does it. You can install packages in most live-systems.
Could someone please make a video?

“Remember you must already have made the OS Partition for this to work!”. So how do I get that part right? Is there any link pointing to OS Partitioning procedure? Or will installing Ubiboot take care of it automatically?
    Thanks in advance!

Can you please port it to E7? It’s IMHO a much better hardware as N9 or N900, but it lacks a propper OS 🙂

@WhoUsesLinuxAnyway: you know, that N900, N9, Sailfish _are_ Linux phones..? Of course everyone can chose his/her O favorite OS. But: When I bought my first N900, I used Linux only at home for many years, so don’t say: when everyone used windows… And if you’re so attracted by windows, why don’t you just use a windows phone, there you have full support. (I hope you don’t do it ;))

Mind your own business, eh. It was a response out of utter frustration. With IOS, Android and now soon-to-be microsoft Nokia…there’s nothing left for the old fashioned. Everything is IOS and Android friendly. Nokia gets sold off cheap. Same goes for computers (although, Macs are just bricks when it comes to gaming)…I am not attracted to windows but I’m not particularly fond of other OSs. (like you said “everyone can choose his/her favorite OS” so bite me go meddle somewhere else)

I would love to port Sailfish and for the Sailfish to be able to flawlessly use Android apps. Is this possible. I heard the first Sailfish to N9 port was ‘buggy” and didn’t include that vital feature (ability to use Android).

Could be used. But thanks to Sailfish SDK which emulates in VM the whole Sailfish OS on a virtual device and its behaviour this not a must condition – as all or most tests can be done with SDK, what is another advantage of Sailfish. Yes, nothing compares to run on a real device finally, but it is rather to be sure then to work with development device IMHO. This is just a tip – you can do it with Sailfish SDK.

I once asked Jolla for a replacement vibrator for the Jolla. They neither sell nor tell you where to get them. I’ve found one. There are some small phone-parts-shops, and online-auction. Beneath parts, lots of phones are sold as broken there, also great for the replacement parts.
