It was in May of 2013 that we saw some new icon design language being shown on Sailfish OS during a conference in China while Marc Dillon showed off his N950 sporting the latest version of Sailfish OS by date and from then, a lot of negativity towards Sailfish OS was gone simply because many including me were saying the icons look rubbish! But we weren’t sure if that’s the final design or not, and thankfully it wasn’t.
Folks at Jolla has thought about it and literally created a design language with a rather interesting story behind it.
It all started like this:
Let’s make some Apps icons. Piece of cake. First, we need a background shape. Everyone screams for it, so let’s create one.
Base shape is problematic. One shape can be good for some icons and bad for some others. Always it ends up with a compromise. Often it may also take more attention than icon metaphor visuals.
Let’s build a system with multiple shapes. We are not only aiming for consistency but also for hierarchical cues tailored for each icon metaphor visual.
Then it ended up like so:
Let’s turn up the heat and merge them..
So on and so forth. But the interesting part is that developers/designers can now create their icons based on the templates provided by Jolla in different resolutions (Although the icons should be 86×86 at the end) but designers would know how the different resolution and different file formats would help.
Jolla has provided the full story, the icon templates and the icon library available for download and interestingly enough; if you download the icon templates you will find some new icons with some familiar names on them! Names of applications that you have not yet witnessed in Sailfish OS! For instance weather app or search app. Despite the fact that at the end of the “Sailfish Icon Story” it’s been written that
Notice, these are just illustrations!
May not match with actual proportion of App launcher exactly.
It won’t stop me of thinking about MWC and new applications being added to the OS during a presentation of some sort announcing an update and **probably** getting out of the Beta name.
Let’s see how the promised January update goes and how they will get ready for the good old MWC.
