It all began last year after Microsoft announced that they will buy Nokia. First non of us believed that almost three years after developing only WP smartphones Nokia would suddenly turn to Android, especially when Microsoft will control Nokia D&S soon enough. But rumors became louder and louder, news about Nokia Android phone where started popping out from different sources and soon we saw first renders, images of so called Nokia Normandy or simply the “X” phone.
Few days before official announcement we already know all of the specs. @evleaks showed Nokia X from all of the angles. All we had to do is wait MWC14 to start to see how it is possible that Nokia is launching forked Android, but still Android smartphone when any day now Microsoft will take D&S division under its brand. We had a lot of questions about Nokia X, one of the biggest was ” Will Microsoft allow this to happen?”. I personally believed it would be canceled by Microsoft soon after announcement.
Almost all Jolla fans, are also Nokia (N9) fans how don’t like Windows Phone and many of us turned to Jolla for that reason, but Nokia with Android still sounds great, doesn’t it? Of course it would never be MeeGo or Sailfish OS, but whole world is awaiting Nokia to make Android smartphone.
And what we got today? A Microsoft product with Android (plus Nokia logo). Nokia X (and its variants, X+ and XL) are running forked Android, with limited Android app support but you will get all of Microsoft apps and services together with Nokia design and build quality.
What is Microsoft trying to do here:
Compete with Jolla? and it’s similar Android support.
Give Nokia fans Android option in case they don’t like Windows Phone.
Compete with other low-end Android smartphones.
Trying to beat Google? with Google’s support(Android).
Make transition from Android to Windows Phone (Lumia) easier, with WP themed Android smartphones.
This is very smart move by Microsoft, they will give you Android-Nokia smartphone, because a lot of Nokia fans are waiting that device. They will make it Windows Phone themed, print Nokia logo and hope your second phone after Nokia WP themed Android will be pure WP Lumia. Now we can see Microsoft supported Nokia-Android from beginning! And they will continue to make Android phones after they fully acquire D&S division from Nokia. Surely many Nokia fans will rush to buy this phone, surely some of them considered to buy Jolla.
But let’s don’t look at Nokia X as something bad for Jolla. Jolla can turn this into advantage by giving Nokia X users Sailfish OS and in that way expanding Sailfish OS to even more customers.
Whatever Microsoft is trying to do I suggest that you don’t but Nokia’s latest Android phones, because they are not Nokia products anymore, stick with Jolla, with truly unique and unlike experience!
And at the end please let me know what you think about all of this, do you agree with me on some points or not? THX 😉
EDIT: I found similar article about MS-Nokia-Android phones on CNET, if anyone is interested in this, Why the Android-powered Nokia X is great for Microsoft, I just want to add it will be great for Jolla if we manage to run Sailfish on Nokia X range of phones.
