Around two month ago there was an article on IT Backstage about a rather nice DIY project for Jolla phone in order to make it able to capture super close-up photos without any software tweak!
I basically forgot to write about it here on JollaUsers but hey, better late than never right?
There are two ways to do this.
- The easy way
- The hard (But the most fun) way!
I myself went for the less fun way because of 1) laziness 2) just read number one.
So let’s start with the hard way first, because it is more fun if you enjoy what I’m about to explain!
First of all I have to point out that the original idea comes from this article from IT Backstage blog. (Thanks Thomas!)
Secondly, you would wanna destroy your DVD drive or how cool if you have a spare one available around you so that you can just open it up and take the lens out!
Yes, you heard me. A DVD or CD Drive and it’s lens! Now I’m sure there will be differences between the lens sizes, like the CD drive has to have a smaller lens, or if it is a laptop drive the lens is definitely more compact than the PC drives.

Pretty easy till now. Just get a DVD Drive and open it up till you see the lens components. Or if you have the PC kind of drive, just open the whole damn thing.
Next, is to get the whole lens comportment out and take the glass lens that sits on top of everything carefully out.
Next, as the featured image suggests, just attach the lens to your OtherHalf. You may find the lens really tiny especially if you are taking it out of a laptop DVD/CD drive, but there are ways to do that as you can see in the picture you can just attach the lens to a piece of metal (even from the same drive, since it’s a wreck now!) and stick it to your TOH with a double sided tape so then you are able to remove it whenever you want.
Or if the lens you took out is big enough to fir the hole like the one taken out by Thomas at IT backstage on your TOH, you can glue them together and make a permanent Macro TOH!
Pros: Super close-up photos/videos are now possible to capture – You’ll look like a geek
Cons: It is really hard to make it work if your lens happens to be smaller than expected!
The results are just magnificent:

the easy way:
Go on eBay, and simply buy a multi-functional lens which contains a Macro, Wide and a Fish eye module that are easily interchangeable and will attach and detach to and from your device with ease!
And the result will turn out to be something close to this:

I hope you enjoyed this post and it was useful for you all!
Make sure to share it with your friends so that they can make their own Macro TOH
Special thanks to Thomas B. Ruecker for sharing the article written by Thomas Stutzmann of IT Backstage and my dear friend Jaakko Roppola, Jolla’s senior Designer for the ideas and photos/videos provided!
