A new WhatsApp Client Called Whastup Too Hit Sailfish OS Soon

WhatsApp, WhatsApp.

An incorporation that pisses everyone off and still has nearly 500 million users. 500 Million!

That was a bittersweet introduction but I had to do it because I’m a WhatsApp user and I can’t be satisfied with their behavior towards other companies at all. There should be understandings, you say? Well I’d say the same but it has to be a 2 way road.

You see, WhatsApp Inc. , now part of Facebook, is available for iOS, Android, Nokia S40, Windows Phone, Symbian, BBOS and the freaking web itself. Yet is it not available for Sailfish OS or as a matter of fact Ubuntu OS nor Firefox OS. Not officially, at leat.

You would say that all those three latter operating systems have less market share than only one of the bigger operating systems combined. That I would call a fair argument but when someone, a developer of some sort, wants to help out his own community and build an app based on Whatsapp protocols [With the option to pay the yearly subscription fee, so there’s no piracy going on] they go ahead and block the damn thing as soon as they find out and as far as I’m concerned [Though I may as well be wrong] those blocked applications such as Mitäkuuluu had done no more harm to anyone that the normal WhatsApp does.

I may be seeing things subjectively and I may be wrong in all I’m saying but at some point I have a point! We as users should have the freedom of using free services such as WhatsApp (Well, free for a year, eh?) on any platform that we like. How’s that for a change?

However, in the days of Nokia N9, there was a developer called Matias (Cepi) Perez from Argentina who had developed a WhatsApp client for MeeGo called “Whatsup” which never ever got caught/banned from WhatsApp, ever, and that is good news. The reason, according to Cepi is that he uses S40 protocols and never changes any core code so the app will actually come up as an official app and it almost never gets caught, at least that’s what I hope.

For now, he is working on a port for Sailfish OS which is currently in the testing phase with a few community members including me (Screenshots below) and admittedly the app is looking damn beautiful in compare to any official WhatsApp client!

Now, I’ve got to say, after all the rant on WhatsApp, this WhatsUP thingy works pretty well as it did on N9!

Registration works with no hassle, the UI is smooth and beautiful and almost lag-less, and the whole thing feels right. There are points that has to be ironed out and bugs that are going to be fixed when the public version hits the OpenRepos.net

I know many Jolla Users who will completely let Android support go after a stable WhatsApp client gets released for Sailfish as a native app! So why not taking some time and donating to Cepi while he’s doing this amazing job of porting his long awaited precious app to our beloved phone?

You can easily donate to Cepi via PayPal for his amazing job and while of course it’s on your own will and it is optional, considering it would be a nice gesture which shows how big and strong our community is.

Note: No ETA as of yet but I can tell from the state of the app that it’ll be released pretty soon in the coming weeks! Fingers crossed.

It lets you add (it’s: send to whatsapp servers) only the contacts you want as Mitäkuuluu or you can only syncronize all of them (so you send all your contactbook data to whatsapp servers)?

I don’t own anyore the number I use with Mitäkuuluu, so I can’t register again… ¿Could the data be migrated from Mitäkuuluu without needing to register again? Maybe this is a question for Cepi, and not for you…

As a N9 WhatsUp user I can answer this one. Registration process relies on the SMS whatsapp server sends to your number when the contact with the application fails. So you can register any number you want, as long as you’re able to receive a SMS with that number.

      Synchronization works for all contacts.

Credit must be given to Cepi as he’s still releasing updates to the MeeGo version. And we’re stuck with MeeGo down here in South America.

If I need to register I can’t use it, and if I have to send all my contacts information I won’t use it even if I could. I will continue with Mitäkuuluu while I can, and afterwards I will stop using Whatsapp service.

Wait, so you’re saying that you did not register for Mitäkuuluu and you’re using it?

No. I registered with a number that I don’t own anymore nowadays, so I can’t re-register. That number was an a.k.a of my real number, obtained freely from a company that has been bought by another one, and it canceled that service.

I won’t use my real mobile number to register on whatsapp. I prefer to pay for SMSs or use other similar apps with good policies and security.

Quit whining and finally move to free software and endtoend encrypted IM apps like textsecure/xmpp+otr etc. If we nerds dont even support this and use a crappy service, nothing will change.

It’s not about moving to encrypted IM apps. When all our friends use Whatsapp and services like that, we are forced to use those services only. It’s because it’s difficult to convince them to whatever encrypted IM apps we use.

It’s really difficult to convince. Our friends use WhatsApp, their friends use WhatsApp, the circles are on going! And you can convince maximum half a circle which will not solve anything… So we’re definitely forced

Nope, if they are real frieds they know how to contact me and except a few people not owning a smartphone all use textsecure or threema for me. I won’t ever touch facebook/whatsapp etc. and they have to live with that. Period. And if Snowden told us anything, it’s that you have to care about your privacy and the one of your friends.

When it comes to social media/instant messaging, you just have to be peer-pressured. All my friends are using Facebook and Whatsapp, so if I quit using them and start using Twitter/Telegram/whatever (I don’t even know), I will lose the reason I use social media at the same time. I mean that you just can’t demand your friends to change their apps just because you do so.

The problem isn’t us nerds, but the “normal” users we want to keep in contact with (family etc). Most of them can’t really be persuaded to leave their comfortable little paywall sandboxes, unless there is a truly compelling argument to be had (the missus has indicated she’ll give my Jolla a try since I can get a full QWERTY keyboard for it, the only thing she misses from her old E7).

And no, security is not an argument that would be considered compelling. There is also no single solution available that would retain a simple UX across all platform options. WhatsApp simply has that corner of the market locked in tight for some reason.

Are you advocating software piracy? Surely if I write an App I am entitled to determine its use? Infortunately however you argument is somewhat distorted. If the app is so important to you then use a device which runs it! Much easier than expecting a port to suit your requirements. Yes, that is an argument not to buy into Jolla but that is essentially the end result of your piece.

Are you suggesting monopoly, in this day and age of free competition, who are they making the apps for, even when one goes to an apple store and gets booted shouldn’t he or she complain even seek litigan as to why he or she is not receiving a service, it may be their legal right but is it ethically or morally correct,

Is there any roadmap or status overview?
Beside this article and the N9 app I found now pages revealing the process of the sailfish app.

    Best regards,

I think this is dead. BTW: Is it called “Whastup too” or WHATSUP too” ??? I think there is a spelling mistake above! Not very professional on THE sailfish blog.

    Have downloaded and installed whatsup-0.1-2.
Its really awesome feeling to have a sailfish native app for Whatsapp.
Really Hats off to “Matias (Cepi) Perez from Argentina” for porting such a great client to Sailfish Platform.
    Thanks a lot.

The issue that I’ve observed after installing the client is :
    > Battery draining (Minor/ could be a memory leak, CPU hogging)
    > Smily not available 🙁 (Can only recieve smily and cannot send.)
    > Multiple font support not available (In my case, its was Hindi).
    > Image gets downloaded, and is not maximized automatically as it would in Whatsapp official client.

Please take it as a constructive feedback and not criticism.

@Kumar – Thanks for the feedback. If anyone (or perez himself) could find a common place to report bugs/feedbacks it would be useful (like github or whatever).

Any info abt the availability of WhastUp for SailfishOS? If it is still in QA I’d be willing to test it and report bugs / issues to the dev, so just send me msg from where to download the app (if it is not yet in OpenRepos or Jolla Store.
