Jolla has aged well. It’s been three years of business and they have been trying different things. From different form factors to different partners, and now a completely new and different strategy.

Jolla is planning to be a software licensing company. As for now, Jolla Ltd. has two devices, one of which is the phone and the other one which is still not out is the tablet that is soon due to be shipped to the customers.
Jolla Ltd., the Finnish mobile company and developer of open mobile operating system Sailfish OS, today announced a change in its company structure and management as further action toward company’s strategy to focus on Sailfish OS licensing and development.
But that’s about it. The Jolla Ltd will not make any more hardware according to their new press release and will now focus on licensing their software, Sailfish OS, to new manufacturers and “join the big seas” with their yet very small boat of over a hundred sailors.
That is not at all bad news. Jolla has worked very hard to achieve what they have today and I’m sure they have done the right thing. Why?
Well, they have proven that they know how to make a software, match it with a hardware in less than 6 months and develop a phone for the masses and ship it to them almost on time while working overtime during the tight time limitation of the end of 2013! The proved that they can, of course the devices was not faultless, but show me a company that ships a 100% faultless device.
Then they wanted to showcase the fact that their software is completely compatible with different form factors such as the tablet. So they developed it, designed it and it soon will be in our hands, despite the latest hardware supplier issues they have been facing.
Now it’s time for a change! It’s time to showcase their “clear goal” to the world as Antti Saarnio has stated.
“Every young company has to find its clear focus at some time, and for Jolla that time is now. We have huge opportunities in the Sailfish OS licensing business, and I am very proud and excited to take responsibility of steering the Jolla ship to a new commercial phase. After three years of intensive Sailfish OS research & development we are now moving full speed to new bigger waters, which requires full focus on software from the team.”
Also, former CEO, Dr. Tomi Pienimäki has moved his position to another company Finnish it-company called “Vincit Group”
Dr. Antti Saarnio, Chairman of Board of Jolla Ltd. takes charge of leading Jolla Ltd. Dr. Tomi Pienimäki, former CEO has been appointed to a new position outside the company, in which he will move during August. A new leader for Jolla devices business will be appointed during this autumn.
Jolla is going to Shanghai’s Mobile World Congress next week as well!
Jolla Ltd. will be present in Mobile World Congress Shanghai next week (July 15-17) and will be showcasing progress in the Sailfish OS licensing business. “This is a key event for us, and a right place to show what we have achieved during the last few months, in particular in India and Russia,” Antti Saarnio continues.

I hope this change is just making the company to climb upwards! Or in other words, sail onwards!
